Marangu Route
DE | EN

(5 or 6 days)
What makes this tour unique is, that you will spend the nights in huts, instead of tents. This fact makes Marangu route very popular and ideal for all people who like a certain standard of comfort. The huts offer shared rooms with bunk beds and a communal dining mess. Bathrooms are shared. Fairly we must admit that this tour is also the most crowded one.
Like on all the other tours, you will be guided and accompanied by a reliable team who will give their best to exceed your expectations. Your breakfast and dinner will be freshly prepared by a cook, lunches may be packed.
The total length of the 5 days route is 43 miles /70 km, choosing the 6 days route, you cover a distance of 50 miles /80 km.

Day 1

After breakfast in your hotel, you will be transferred to Marangu gate (6460ft / 1970m) where you will meet your guide. He will assist you with final preparations and be available to give any information needed. Your luggage will be weighed and handed to the porters and you will start your hiking tour!
The easy trail takes you through the lush rainforest where you might observe colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and various birds. After a five hour walk, you will reach Mandara hut at an altitude of 6500 ft / 270 0m, where your dinner will be served and you will spend the night.

Day 2

You continue on the trail through the montane forest and reach the base of Maundi Crater. Step by step you will emerge from dense vegetation and enjoy your first views of Kibo. Walk slowly and don't forget to drink enough! In this area you will observe the giant lobelia and the “Senecia Kilimanjari“. The trail takes you up and down the moorland to Horombo hut (12200 ft / 3720 m), which you will reach after about 6 hours. .You will notice the lower temperatures at this elevation and enjoy a cup of tea and later your dinner.

Day 3

Choosing the 6 days route – which we strongly recommend for better acclimatization – you will spend the day with an unhurried hike to the Zebra Rocks, have lunch as well as dinner at Horombo hut and spend a second night there.

Day 4
(Day 3 with 5–days route)

After a rich breakfast at the hut, today's trail will take you up into the alpine desert zone. There are two trails to the “Saddle“ (the area between Mawenzi and Kibo): the upper route on the right is steeper and very stony, the lower route is easier and also a bit shorter. On this route you will also pass the last water point at 13550 ft / 4130 m. After a six hour hike, you will reach Kibo hut at 15520 ft / 4730 m, your last base from which you will attempt the summit. At this point most climbers experience some symptoms of altitude sickness like headache or nausea. Talk to your guide about it, he is familiar with these things and will assist you in any way.
Consider the exhausting hike of the coming night, go to bed early and try to get as much rest as possible.

Day 5
(Day 4 with 5–days route)

Around midnight, after having some tea and biscuits, you will start with the toughest stage of your tour. The steep and rocky path takes you up gradually. You will get chances for rests every hour, for example at Hans Meyer Cave at 16900 ft / 5150 m. Fatigue and low temperatures are the main challenges on your track to Gilman's point (18640 ft / 5681 m), your first goal.
Upwards, you slowly continue to Stella point (18884 ft / 5756 m). From here the trail ascends less steep than before and after a strenuous hike you will reach Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point at 19340 ft / 5895 m. This exhilarating experience, breathtaking views and the feeling of satisfaction will make you forget the struggles of the last 6 hours.
After taking photographs and a short rest you descend again to Kibo hut, where your cook will wait with a strengthening meal. Later you will continue down to Horombo hut where you will stay overnight.
The total hiking time of this day is 12 to 14 hrs.

Day 6
(Day 5 with 5–days route)

After a well-earned rest and your last breakfast on the mountain your team will gather for the traditional farewell ceremony. On this occasion you can express your gratitude or express any criticism you may have to them. You can also show your appreciation by tipping your team.
Finally you will set off for the last stage of your trail, a comfortable walk to Marangu gate, which you will reach in the early afternoon.
Here you have to sign out and you will receive your summit certificate – issued in different colours depending on whether you reached Uhuru Peak, Stella Point or Gilman's Point. You will also find chances to purchase various souvenirs.
Lastly you will be taken back to your hotel.
