(6 or 7 days)
This climbing route is said to be the most scenic one. It is also the route with the highest success rate. It offers plenty of opportunities for altitude acclimatization and with the option of an additional day at Karanga camp also enough time for resting before going for the summit. With its few steep sections it's ideal for all hikers.
The total length of the trail is 37 miles / 62 km. It is a fully catered camping tour, rich breakfasts and three-course dinners will be prepared freshly, lunches will be packed when necessary. We will also provide you with sufficient drinking water.
After breakfast you will be picked up in your hotel and transferred to Machame Gate (5870ft / 1790 m). Here you register and get a short briefing from your guide. Then you will start your climbing tour through the dense rainforest. Enjoy the cool climate and the wonderful vegetation. Between the branches of huge trees you may watch blue monkeys.
After 5-6 hrs you will reach Machame camp (9350 ft / 2850 m).
Today's trail leads you through bush- and moorlands with increasingly sparse vegetation. Gaining height little by little you may notice that breathing becomes more difficult. Walk slowly and don't forget to drink enough. In this section of the trail you will enjoy wonderful vistas to Mount Meru as well as the Kibo.
The day finishes at Shira Camp ( 12500 ft / 3810 m) which you will reach after about 5 hrs.
The day starts in the moorlands and moves up into alpine desert, the highest point being the Lava Tower site (~15000 ft / ~4600 m). Then you descend again, passing through the valley of senecios, reaching Barranco Camp at 12930 ft / 3940 m after 6–7 hrs. According to the climber's motto „climb high – sleep low“ this day will help you with altitude acclimatization and boost your chances to reach the summit.
After breakfast you will climb up Barranco Wall, a sort of scramble in climbing terms. For this stage you should be sure-footed, it isn't a climbing tour though. The top of the wall has attractive views of snow-covered Kibo and the surrounding landscape. Now you continue crossing some rivulets, passing up and down sections and finally ascending through a rocky zone up to Barafu Camp ( 15320ft/ 4670 m). At this altitude almost everybody experiences some headache or dizziness. These symptoms of altitude sickness typically go away soon. Your guide will assist you if discomfort becomes severe. Today's hiking time is app.7 hrs.
Choosing the 7 days route you will only go to Karanga Camp (12960 ft / 3950 m), which you will reach after about 4 hrs. On the 5th day you will continue to Barafu Camp. This gives you additional chances of acclimatization and time for resting before attempting the summit.
This day starts very early, after a few hours of sleep you will get ready around midnight. Temperatures below the freezing point and the steep path upon frozen gravel are the main challenges at this section. Slowly you gain height and after a strenuous hike you will reach your first target, Stella Point (18884 ft / 5756 m). Incited by this achievement you carry on and about one hour later you will arrive at Uhuru Peak (19340ft / 5895m) – the highest point of Africa!
This experience is beyond words! You will enjoy breathtaking views of the glaciers and the crater, which will make you forget the strenuous climb.
The descent back to Barafu Camp usually takes two to three hours. After a strenghtening meal and a short rest you will continue going down to Mweka Camp (10040 ft / 3060 m), which you will reach in the late afternoon. The total hiking time of this day is app. 14 hrs.
After breakfast your team will gather for the traditional farewell-ceremony. On this occasion you can express your gratitude or any concerns. You may also tip your guide and the rest of the team.
Afterwards you set off for the stroll down to Mweka Gate which you will reach around noon.
While waiting for your certificate to be issued you should take a look at the various souvenirs offered. Lastly you will be taken back to your hotel.
