This route is relatively new and can be recommended due to its remoteness and beauty. It is also a route with a very high success rate. You approach the mountain from the west, gaining heigth very slowly which maximises altitude acclimatization.
The length of the trail is approx. 70km / 42miles. Lemosho route is perfect for all hikers, there is only one steep section on day 5. It's a fully catered camping tour, you will be provided with freshly prepared meals for breakfast and dinner, lunches may be packed.
You will be picked up from your hotel after breakfast, the transfer to Londorossi Gate takes about four hours. Here you meet your guide who will accompany you and gladly assist you with further information. After completing entry formalities we drive you to the trailhead (7800 ft / 2380 m). There we will have lunch before starting our hiking tour through the lush rainforest. Between all sorts of green plants you may even see blue monkeys. After only 3–4 hrs we will reach Forest Camp (9500 ft / 2900 m). Relax and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and later your dinner.
Gradually the trail will lead us out of the dense forest into moorland, where you will observe colorful plants. Going upwards we will cross small streams and reach the Shira Ridge before descending again to Shira 1 Camp (11500 ft / 3500 m). Hiking time on the second day is approx. 6–7 hrs. Across the plateau you will enjoy marvellous vistas of the Kibo. Your cook will serve you some delicious food and you will have a good night's rest.
We continue walking up and down on moorland meadows, enjoying the scenic attractions of the Shira plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. Some bizarre rock formations like Shira Cathedral, a huge buttress, surrounded by spires and pinnacles grant an atmosphere of wilderness. After only 4–5 hours we will reach Shira 2 Camp (12600 ft / 3840 m), where your tent and a cup of tea or coffee will be ready for you!
Continuing eastwards, following the slope of the plateau, we leave the heather and moorland and enter into the alpine desert zone. At a junction we will meet with hikers on Machame route and then ascend to Lava tower (15190 ft /4630 m). On the steeper parts of this section you may realise, that due to altitude breathing becomes harder. Climb slowly, your guide will also remind you repeatedly to drink enough. After a well deserved lunch break we descend into the Barranco Valley, where you will experience a unique alpine scenery with giant senecios and lobelias. Climbing up and down again, this day is perfect for acclimatization.
At Barranco Camp (12930 ft / 3940 m)your tent is already prepared, now you can rest and enjoy fantastic views of Kibo.
After breakfast you have to climb up Barranco wall – imposing at first sight, it usually turns out to be easier than it looks. While resting on top of the wall you may enjoy marvellous vistas of the valleys of Barranco and Karanga as well as the Kibo. Then we stroll downwards again and arrive at Karanga Camp (12960 ft / 3950 m) around noon.
Choosing the 7 days tour, you will continue on the trail up and down through Karanga valley and finally ascend to Barafu Camp on 15320 ft / 4670 m, where you wil arrive in the late afternoon. At this point most climbers experience some headache or breathlessness. These symptoms of altitude sickness typically go away soon. Talk to your guide, he will assist you with all your concerns.

If you choose the 8 days tour you will spend the night at Karanga Camp. This option gives you additional time for acclimatization and increases your chances for a successful climb! You will proceed towards Barafu Camp on day 6.
Summit day starts in the middle of the night on Mount Kilimanjaro! After a few hours of sleep you will get ready around midnight, have a cup of tea and some biscuits and then start moving upwards. The steep trail and temperatures below the freezing point make this section a real challenge. Your guide will advise you repeatedly to walk slowly and you will have several chances to rest.
You will reach Stella Point (18884 ft / 5756 m) after 5–6 hours. If the weather permits, you may watch a magnificient sunrise during your short rest and then continue your climb on the snow–covered path. About an hour later your target is near! You arrive at Uhuru Peak (19340ft / 5895m), Africa's highest point – the feeling of success is a breathtaking experience!
You won't spend too much time here, just take pictures and enjoy impressing views of the glaciers and down into the the crater.
The decent back to Barafu takes 2–3 hours. After a nap in your tent and a freshly prepared, strenghtening meal, you hike downwards for another 3–4 hours and reach Mweka Camp (10040 ft /3060 m) in the late afternoon. Your cook will wait with delicous food and your tent will be already prepared. Enjoy a well–earned rest.
After your last breakfast on the mountain your whole team will gather for the traditional farewell ceremony. Now you can express your gratitude for an excellent service or express any concerns you may have. If you want to show your appreciation by tipping your guides and the rest of the team, this would be the right moment.
Finally, you head off for the last section of the tour, a relaxed walk to Mweka Gate, which you will reach around noon.
